Unlike the sessions for The Photo Album, which had been tightly scheduled and stressful, the four decided that the next record should be allowed to grow organically over a leisurely six-month period. The Photo Album certainly sounded more refined than previous work, with Walla’s aptitude for production strengthened following the founding of his Seattle-based ‘Hall of Justice’ recording studios. By this point, the group had settled into an effective musical niche, with emotive guitar, piano and lyricism at its centre, with only occasional forays into the type of distorted heavy rock that many of their indie rock peers leaned on. ![]() Albeit, one that very few people heard at the time.īy 2001, Death Cab had undergone several key changes, particularly the addition of Jason McGerr on percussion after the departure of Nathan Good (and his replacement Michael Schorr), following third record The Photo Album. Follow-up We Have The Facts and We’re Voting Yes continued to solidify the band’s sound, and was soon considered by many in-the-know to be the troupe’s first bona-fide classic. It was a shaky debut, but it bore evidence of the band’s latent talents, particularly Gibbard’s aptitude for striking lyricism coalescing with Walla’s considered application of sweet guitar hooks. Instead of recording in a studio, the band’s material was thinly tracked and produced by Chris Walla at home with a vintage eight-track Tascam 80-8 reel-to-reel. Released in 1998, Death Cab’s debut Something About Airplanes was put out by independent Seattle label Barsuk Records. Gibbard’s new creative mothership was dubbed ‘Death Cab for Cutie’ – a nod to the Elvis pastiche that a terrifying Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band performed at the end of The Beatles’ Magical Mystery Tour – Gibbard soon expanded his project into a full band, enlisting fellow Western Washington University students Chris Walla, Nick Harmer and Nathan Good on guitar, bass and drums respectively. ![]() Each one has unique activities and its own special headquarters. ![]() GL_CLAMP_TO_BORDER: Coordinates outside the range are now given a user-specified border color.Įach of the options have a different visual output when using texture coordinates outside the default range. The result is that higher coordinates become clamped to the edge, resulting in a stretched edge pattern. GL_CLAMP_TO_EDGE: Clamps the coordinates between 0 and 1.GL_MIRRORED_REPEAT: Same as GL_REPEAT but mirrors the image with each repeat.GL_REPEAT: The default behavior for textures.Texture coordinates usually range from (0,0) to (1,1) but what happens if we specify coordinates outside this range? The default behavior of OpenGL is to repeat the texture images (we basically ignore the integer part of the floating point texture coordinate), but there are more options OpenGL offers: ![]() ![]() It is thus our job to tell OpenGL how it should sample its textures. Texture sampling has a loose interpretation and can be done in many different ways. The resulting texture coordinates would then look like this: We only have to pass 3 texture coordinates to the vertex shader, which then passes those to the fragment shader that neatly interpolates all the texture coordinates for each fragment. The top of the triangle should correspond with the top-center of the texture image so we take (0.5,1.0) as its texture coordinate. The same applies to the bottom-right side with a (1,0) texture coordinate. We want the bottom-left side of the triangle to correspond with the bottom-left side of the texture so we use the (0,0) texture coordinate for the triangle's bottom-left vertex. We specify 3 texture coordinate points for the triangle. The following image shows how we map texture coordinates to the triangle: Texture coordinates start at (0,0) for the lower left corner of a texture image to (1,1) for the upper right corner of a texture image. Retrieving the texture color using texture coordinates is called sampling. Texture coordinates range from 0 to 1 in the x and y axis (remember that we use 2D texture images). Fragment interpolation then does the rest for the other fragments. Each vertex should thus have a texture coordinate associated with them that specifies what part of the texture image to sample from. In order to map a texture to the triangle we need to tell each vertex of the triangle which part of the texture it corresponds to. Next to images, textures can also be used to store a large collection of arbitrary data to send to the shaders, but we'll leave that for a different topic.īelow you'll see a texture image of a brick wall mapped to the triangle from the previous chapter. Because we can insert a lot of detail in a single image, we can give the illusion the object is extremely detailed without having to specify extra vertices. A texture is a 2D image (even 1D and 3D textures exist) used to add detail to an object think of a texture as a piece of paper with a nice brick image (for example) on it neatly folded over your 3D house so it looks like your house has a stone exterior. What artists and programmers generally prefer is to use a texture. This takes up a considerable amount of extra overhead, since each model needs a lot more vertices and for each vertex a color attribute as well. However, to get a fair bit of realism we'd have to have many vertices so we could specify a lot of colors. We learned that to add more detail to our objects we can use colors for each vertex to create some interesting images. ![]() After consulting with two celebrity colorists, and considering dozens of formulas, we landed on the following best in show. We conducted hours of research on the best color removers on the market, evaluating them on formula type, what types of color they're effective in removing, and how gentle they are on your hair. And finally, once you’re done, both experts suggest following up with a reparative mask ASAP to add back much-needed hydration. Also important: Make sure the product is evenly saturated throughout your hair to avoid ending up with a splotchy result, notes Fleming. “The ends of your hair tend to be more porous, so they’ll usually hold onto artificial color more stubbornly,” explains Lee. Keep in mind that it’s always best to apply the remover to your ends first. It’s also imperative to follow the directions of the particular product you’re using to a T-now is not the time for creative license. Los Angeles-based colorist and owner of Highbrow Hippie salon Kadi Lee agrees: “If these two ingredients are present, you’re just asking for more trouble.” Start by washing your hair with a clarifying shampoo, which will help remove some of the dyes and enhance the results of the remover, says Fleming. ![]() “Every time color is removed from your hair you run the risk of damage, so I recommend looking for one that’s gentle, moisturizing, and free of bleach and ammonia,” advises Fleming. That being said, if you are going to take matters into your own hands, here’s what you need to know. The big caveat here? In an ideal world, it’s always best to have a professional do any kind of color removing and/or correction, cautions colorist Kristen Fleming, color director of 3rd Coast Salon in Chicago, who notes that it’s a complicated process even for the pros. That’s where hair color removers come in, essentially acting as magic erasers to strip out the unwanted dye. No matter whether it’s a post-salon job that you’re not excited about or a DIY hair coloring situation gone horribly wrong, hair color snafus can and do happen.
